Use the opportunity along the Whale Route to observe the migration of the Southern Right Whale on your holiday or vacation in South Africa. The Southern Right whale migrates from Antarctica to calve in the sheltered bays of the east coast of southern Africa. From July to November, Walker Bay is one of the worlds most spectacular vantage points for whale-watching. Whales breach, lobtail and engage in courtship rituals - often as close as 50 metres from the shore. Enjoy spectacular coastal scenery, sandy beaches and wonderful displays of wild flowers in springtime. Grootbos Nature Reserve nestles in the fynbos-clad hills of a 1000 hectare nature reserve above Walker Bay. Follow trails through the mysterious milkwood coastal forest, which shelters a wide variety of small animals and over 1000 species of Cape flora. Explore the reserve on foot, on horseback, mountain-bike or in a 4x4. The 10-kilometre Cliff Path that follows the shore around Walker Bay with the combination of low cliffs and deep water, allows you be able to look down and see whales as close as 10 metres away.
